My wife had a appointment with her specialist doctor in Amarillo this past week. As her health seems to deteriorate before my eyes, I’m doing anything and everything I possibly can to help relieve her pain.... I told the good Lord in prayer, I would wrestle the arc angel for her life, and that I needed her more than heaven. This is a woman that I’ve seen writing get well cards to mail to sick people on her worst day. In doing so, many a time I’ve witnessed her go to sleep writing said cards ... People love her and she loves people ! She can see their pain. She is talkative, and truly never met a stranger.. Lisa has Behcets syndrome, no immune system, all three types of arthritis , and now is diabetic.
She takes steroids every day and these drugs cut both ways. Every month she has a seven hour infusion to supplement a immune system that, well, she does not have. For years I gave her a weekly infusion sub Q under her skin. When the Dr. decided her life would be better if given the iv infusion per month, I balked! I told the Dr that there was NO Way, that I’d probe for a vein and operate the computerized caterpillar type pump. He told me I needed medication and to relax ? No Sir I told him, I need help ! In no uncertain terms that with the new idea of monthly infusions I’d not be part of hurting her ANYMORE ! I think I scared the doctor and most prolly did. I’m not really afraid of anything but I was scared...He ordered the monthly infusion to be in home by a certified RN IV nurse.
On with the Story.
I got Lisa to her appt early and sat outside and watched a multitude of really sick people go in and out of the office. The specialist there is a Lebanese Christian from said country. He treats many many people with Behcets syndrome.
( Silk Route Disease)
Lisa booked our stay at a hotel funded by donations from doctors and families, that provides secure housing for those in medical need. She has always been thrifty and tries to save money . Now Lisa is on Medicare and we buy blue cross blue shield for myself and her secondary supplemental insurance, and yet I pay on average another 18 K or so out of pocket each and every year. The stay charge is $45. There are cameras everywhere. After I took our luggage in , I thought I’d have a smoke. ( I know I’m in the wrong and that people detest tobacco but it is my only vice)
Well, outside here comes a little Mexican guy picking up cig butts up off of the parking lot. He told me this activity is not permitted on campus and asked if the butts he’d picked up were mine. I said no Sir, that I had put mine in that trash can over there, that was on fire ! Not a word !
Next destination, Trinidad Colorado. With car thermostat set at a healthy 54 degrees , ( Lisa is always to hot from steroids ) away we go. Now after driving a average of 80- 90 mph in NM, if people think I’m scared of a ticket, well I’m not ! In Trinidad I told Lisa that I was not going into the head shop for any reason and to go get whatever CBD oils she wanted. Now there are CBD hemp oils everywhere but she says the cannibus oils relieve her pain the best. I don’t know , I’ve never tried any so whatever is best for her mentally or physically is just going to happen, period ! So, we drive back to Raton crossing the infamous pass. ( Road crews work on it year in and out ) and stay the night.
Next morning , load up rolling east in a hurry I slow down and turn north heading for Capulan volcano. Lisa asks me what the heck I’m doing as she has zero interest in seeing that Mtn as we can see it anyway. No I tell her, I have no interest in visiting the volcano , I’m going a little further north, to Folsom . A bucket list situation for me, I explained..
Now Folsom is not much, there is not a population sign, I figure maybe up to 40 people live there. Making my way down the road while avoiding hundreds of wild turkey, I made it to the museum!!! It was closed! There was a phone number on the door that said if anyone called, someone would show up to open. I called, no answer no voice mail at the end of the ring. It hurt my feelings as I was prepared to make a in person donation to support the site.
I can see how the ancient people would of loved this area, it was beautiful and wild game can be seen everywhere.
Back on the highway heading east , as far as the eye could see only grassland. Only ranch fence in the distances I can only imagine all of the camp sites of all the NA people who once lived there. The volcanic earth holds only grass for about 80 miles east of there and then the mesquite trees begin. I suppose the black rock surface prevents the spread of the Spanish non natives. Every few miles only the lonesome windmill providing water to stock cattle.
So, the long and short of this story is that I got selfish and did make a bucket list if with only partial success. I had made my way to where the story Started !
