Were you trolling or just drifting? We use to kill them trolling with bettlespins black with yellow stripes. Probably bedding this time of the year in 5-10 ft of water.

Yes, yum! My Grandpa taught me fish for Bream at a big lake here; we’d fry ‘em for breakfast!

Nice little mess. Caught enough worth dirtying the frying pan anyway. Some of the best eating fish.

We say “mess” of fish, too. That a Southern expression, you think?

I don't' know? Have always referred to it as a mess as long as I can remember.

Benji, PointHound, WillJo, Surface, Josie, Tam, KP, and any and all fishing Southerners who may refer to their string as “a messa fish”: do we say that because we’ve always heard it from our fathers, mothers, grandpas, uncles, siblings and cousins? That’s my reason, but when and why did it become colloquialism of our fore-bearers? According to a Mississippi Dept of Marine Resources biologist who grew up in Louisiana wetlands, comes old French word “mes”, meaning a portion of food.

Hey cecilia....not sure about how the origin began for the term to be used.....but being southern...its always been a staple to refer as a lot of fish. Something past down to me from my parents and probably theirs

Hey surface.....we were using plastic jigs with a crappie niblet on the hook. Not sure if we'd had any better luck using live shad......we had a buddy that went out the next day and he didnt catch any

Sometimes they want big minnows sometimes small. I've never tried jigs on them before.

Know showing just like a dog with a bone, but “mess of fish” made me remember “mess hall” where spent many family mealtimes. Looky (if you can; if can’t, Wikipedia entry. Now, this wordhound burying this bone!)
