  • A Dozen Little Sneaky Ground Buzzards

This summer I have been watching two large batches of little Turkeys (twelve and ten). In the past the clutches have been hit hard by egg eating animals. The two large batches this year will really add to the turkey population.

Good hatch! River bottom flooding is what hurts our nesting the most here in NW Tn. This year has been dry so I hope we have good clutches here also.

Have you ever watched the PBS documentary "My Life as a Turkey" ? It is amazing and can be found online.

Hey Dylan, I haven't seen that one: I'll have to look it up.

Ron, You give us some really great wildlife pics and now some more. I enjoy seeing them. I managed to see an adult turkey feeding alongside Interstate 65 last week as I was driving north to make a quick trip up to Tennessee. Did you get this photo with a hand held camera or was in on one of those "sneaky" trail cams?

Hey Joe, I got this shot on a trail cam. I have half a dozen cameras but this is the only one I have out right now.

AWESOME!!! i love seeing big hatches of turkeys
mostly because it just means there will be that many more to hunt

weve had a good year this year here also

when i was turkey hunting this spring i stumbled across a whole bunch of feathers and could tell that a predator had killed a turkey in that spot
about 15 yds past that i found about 8 busted eggs.i started looking a little closer into the brush on the field edge right there and found the nest with one remaining egg in it
two days later that egg had also been eaten

so i figure a yote got the hen and coons or a skunk got the eggs

i will be yote hunting that area come winter,as i did see a lot of fresh dens there this spring which tells me they were having pups in that area so the population should be up
but with any luck i can reduce it as they are hard on the deer and turkies, both of which i like to hunt

Hi SGB: You made a very interesting post. Because I don't get out in the woods like I used to, I enjoy more than our younger members the posts of you guys that do. I very much like your comments regarding your wildlife observations, etc. I understand (or maybe I do not and I don't understand squat) that you have had a great many difficult challenges in recent times and that having time to devote to hunting, knapping and your other hobbies is difficult. For that reason, I doubly appreciate your contributions to this forum. And for what it is worth, your post in another section of this forum (a chert knapped folding knife) is an amazing example of your skill and the product of an amazing imagination. When it comes to brilliant works of art, imagination trumps skill every time. When both traits are combined in one individual, I think it is a rare and special occurrence. You maybe a better judge of your mind and skill than am I,:but, from this old fart sitting here on the sidelines that is what I think.

Joe,thank you for such kind words
yes i(we) have had some recent difficulties in life the last couple of years.but we take what life gives us and then try and move on the best we can.
my wife is a trooper and keeps pushing me to go hunting and work on my hobbies, even when i try and focus on what really needs to be done.she knows how much i love those things.
which shows how much she loves me.
things are starting to look a little better in our lives here, wifes health seems to be improving.she has to go in for her annual check next week so we wait and see how that comes out.
god willing it we be all good news.

im hoping to be able to spend more time in the woods this fall, bow hunting starts next month, fall turkey in october and then all winter chasing predators.
but if things dont go the way we hope next week, then i wont be spending much time hunting, which is fine as the critters will still be there when i can get to the woods.
her and her health are the most important things.

i dont think i am all that talented,so i appreciate when others think i am.
i know i am my own worst critic.i never feel my hobby work is up to par with the others, even when they tell me that my work is as good as theirs.

once again, thanks for the very kind words and i am very glad you like my work and posts

Hey Ron - Love the pic. I haven't seen as many turkey in the past couple of years. Before that I could count 3 or 4 hens escorting about 40 young'uns down the hillside off my back porch. I still see turkey, just not as many. Not sure what's going on but I highly suspect coyotes. ...Chuck

wow 12 of em! thats a good momma bird right there! here in R.I. theres no shortage of turkeys i can tell ya that! when i was a kid it was still a thrill to see one or two here and there out in the countryside, but nowadays theres so many that flocks of em' 20-30 + that live right in some of our most built up populated towns. they run amuck all over the place and they aint scared of ya either! my mom lives out in the countryside and has a HERD of them blitzkreig thru her yahd every evening. they got birdfeeders and stuff set up all over the place and the turkeys come in like maniacs at full speed and scare off all the other birds and the squirrels and they clean the place out then run back off almost as quick as they invaded in. its funny as hell to watch too, just dont dont in their way or they'll pick ya clean! lol
call me Jay, i live in R.I.
