A Steller’s Sea Eagle

This Steller’s Sea Eagle has been spotted all over North America for the last year and a half. From Alaska to Nova Scotia, to Texas, thousands of miles from its native Asian range. Rare, only about 10,000 remain. Now, it’s been spotted in Ma., on the Taunton River, as seen in this photo….These guys are one of the largest raptors in nature, with a wing span of up to 8 feet….

Turns out there are only about 5000, not 10,000, left in the wild. The eagle was seen in the company of two juvenile Bald eagles. The Massachusetts DEM, which had posted the Facebook post that alerted people to the sighting, stated that there is one instance known, from Alaska, where one of these sea eagles paired with a Bald eagle. Do not know if they actually bred. But in this Ma. sighting, the Steller’s Sea Eagle was perched in a tree in the company of two juvenile Bald eagles……

I think I may have seen this guy on the cape a few weeks ago in barnatable at the beach...what I thought to be a bald eagle seemed to be unusually big..
