New study refutes the much criticized paper claiming the Hopewell were affected by an incoming cosmic airburst. Airbursts from meteors can certainly do much damage. Recall the fall of the Chelyabinsk meteorite in Russia a few years ago. That airburst occurred high in the atmosphere, over 1000 were injured, mostly from shattering glass. But, had the airburst happened a few miles lower in the atmosphere, an estimated 1 million people would have been killed. Anyway, the Hopewell airburst theory seems effectively debunked now:
