  • Effigy?

Found this petrified wood that looks like a hawk. My gpa thinks its a preform of a community pipe made to look like a hawk. the eye goes through all the way to the other side. It also has nostrils that appear etched out. We dont know what to make of this ... and i cant tell if its been worked as i am just learning.... my gpa has been digging archeological sites since his 20s. Any opinions would be wonderful!

        Welcome from west central Florida..

I believe Granpa’s pullin your leg....I honestly believe no artist would rough out a beak and eyes before he/she had more of the shape down ...

I see in a previous post you have posted some nice finds 👍..Would love for you to share some of Grandad’s finds..Some beautiful artifacts come out of Ohio.

Your gpa is wrong and he probably knows it as Hal suggests. If you don't already know what pareidolia means then you need to look it up in a dictionary.

            My non expert guess
looks to me more like a snapping turtle head
but I see no 'work' alterations
I think it's the latest craze
            i.e. pareidolia

            Don't get me wrong,
those people were more in tune with nature then we ever will be,
and I'm sure 'saw' all kinds of things in objects
but I don't think it was a 'cryptic' writing system etc as some put forth
(I know you said pipe-but this is my segway to a tiny 'rant')

            First off no 'standardization /commonality'-
So how would others know to look at and/interpret these supposed picture stories/stones?
(Maybe they used them for puppet shows?)
(My little joke/3% serious thought on subject)

            But seriously;
            as skilled as they were,
if they wanted an object to look like an animal, person etc.
            It did
plenty examples of pipes, charms-statues, beads etc. to prove it
Just my take at this point.
            Happy Hunting!

It’s a rock. It’s not altered by humans. It’s not an effigy.
