  • Markings on grooved axe.

My cousin found this axe probably 20 years ago with me standing beside him in McCurtian Co Oklahoma. I have ask several collectors and Archeologist about the markings and they have never seen anything like it. Hope someone has some insight. Thank you.

I have seen that very thing on several artifacts. Don't know the purpose of it but it was done over a large area for some reason.

Very interesting. The crosshatch and checkerboard designs have been found on artifacts all over the world. Thanks for sharing this artifact with us.

The only piece we ever found in Connecticut with incised line designs. Not sure what this was used for? The lines may have been added to help grip it. It could have been used to apply brain tan to pelt? The edges are rubbed smooth .

Cool. Whatever the crosshatch represents, it is one of the most common design motifs, often seen in petroglyph panels, or on portable petroglyphs, like this quartzite cobble….

Did you notice there are 4 different sets of markings on the axe, there is a smaller set on the tip of the axe on both faces. On one side the smaller set angles to the left.

That's really cool. Not much I can add, that hasn't been said. I have a loaf stone that has similar markings. The guy I hunt with has a cool piece of catilinite that has a lizard looking thingy scratched on it. It's interesting that, in general, all over the country the natives seemed to enjoy scratching on stuff.
