Fluted?

I've picked up several things that have a flute up the middle. Is there anything I can learn about that; timeframes, tribes, purposes, etc?

Bifaces with thinning flakes. These may look like flutes but when creating a preform it is necessary to thin from ends as well as from lateral edges.

Thanks Hoss. I originally thought they were preforms but once I started looking at the "flutes" I figured they might be finished. Your explanation makes a lot of sense to me. The "flutes" are only on one side if that makes a difference. I have several pieces that I thought were preforms but with no "flute" on them. Any chance they are scrapers or something other than preforms?
