  • Grinding stone vs hammer, pecking stones?

I was just wondering how you all tell the difference between grinding stones and hammer stones in some situations when the stones share the same characteristics such as shape and form ? Do you mostly go by the polish? For example does a grinding stone have more of s smooth polish apposed to a hammer stone having more of a rough battered polish?

Edges are banged up. I've found hammer stone's that could easily have been grinding stones. the give away is the rough banged up edges Click image for larger version

Not all hammerstones are this obvious but this use wear is a dead giveaway.

At one of my sites, dominated by quartz Wading River tools, I found a number of hammerstones, usually the same grade of quartzite, and showing little usage. Meaning the usage is obvious, but the hammer has not been battered to heck, making for actual decent looking hammer stones, lol..

Example 1, battering at both ends…

Example 3, same quartzite, smaller, and again little used, battering at both ends…

Example 4, battered at both ends…, somewhat lower grade of quartzite.

Finally, from another site, an example of a so-called pitted hammer stone…, battered at ends, small pit in center…

Great examples Charlie. I really like the last one with the pecked finger hold.
