A few weeks ago I got a text from a steward with the Texas Historical Commission asking if I wanted to help with a bison excavation, as if I could possibly say no. A rancher's son in Burnet County was fishing in the creek and noticed something the size of a cigarette eroding out of the bank above him. Further inspection revealed a complete bison skeleton. Here's a video of the first weekend of the excavation, wherein we removed the skull and mandible. Our current estimate is that the specimen is somewhere between a couple hundred to a thousand years old.
The Center for Archeological Research at UTSA will provide radiocarbon dating and analysis. Samples were collected from inside the body cavity for soil analysis at a lab in Austin. Another expert will analyze the bones for any cut marks or other evidence of human interaction. Three suspected resharpening flakes were found within, but they could be flood debris. More to come.
