Some nice Fort Payne Artifacts I have acquired in the past year. First up a 3" Turkey Tail Beautiful Fort Payne material. In the mottling there is a hint of blue.

Next up is a blade that was described as a Tennessee River Knife sure is sweet four inches long. It has a pretty good deposit of Caliche along one edge.

You can see the blueish hues in the mottling on the Fort Payne.

I have a hard time telling the difference in Ft. Payne and Dover.  Is Dover mainly darker?  I would like to see some more examples.

Dover comes in more than one shade, I am not expert but it is one of the more common materials where I hunt. There is black, brown, and blonde dover that I am aware of. I have found artifacts in all three shades that was mentioned. As for fort payne I would like to see more examples myself.

I have a hard time looking through my pics and trying to remember the material, was looking for a blonde piece to put in I think the last blade is. Not where I can get it out and check at the moment.

Kurt some nice points there man. Thanks for showing. I am no expert either the ones I showed were all bought at auction. They came described as   Fort Payne The two from KY and the Bifurcate was described as   Dover. In hand I can see a difference for sure. Any chance you can get clearer pictures? Man I like this one for sure is sweet and that first one too. Thanks again

If there some blue in it near the Base right side? Or is it just the picture?

It is too bad there is not written descriptions along with all these samples other than place found.

Kurt, it looks to me like the 4th pic, the one Hoss reposted is Ft. Payne.  If it's not I'm just giving up on trying to figure out material.

will try to get better pics, I was reading as much as I could find about fort payne chert on net lastnight. It seems to me it would be hard to tell them apart. From what I read fort payne stains more? Will work on better pics.

this is the first time some of these pieces have sat next to each other. Some of these pieces I do not like to get out of their safe place, hope it gives some comparison and you enjoy them. I am by no means in anyway familiar with naming materials, but I do believe these pieces are dover chert in diffrent shades. The killer pinetree is brown dover for sure, I wish the color would come out better, it has quite a patern. anyway I am sure that their will be someone chime in with the right answer. I am glad for the topic, it might help educate me and some others. Will be glad to learn all I can.

thanks Hoss, there is several hundred miles of walking there.  I have more pieces of similar color, but I get nervous getting pieces out of diffrent cases and moving them around. They have survived too long for me to drop em, try to make a habbit of handling them one at a time.  I was reading on a few diffrent sites, one is ASAA The Amateur Archaeologist Online.  I typed in ametuer archaeologist online fort payne chert on google search, there is alot of info.
