  • Blue Shale

Hi, I am in Halifax County, NC. I have 4 pieces that I have been told are made of blue shale. It's a very smooth rock that seems like it would much more brittle when compared to the more common quartz tools/points. Has anyone else found anything else made of this material? You rarely see shale listed as a material used by natives.

I could easily be wrong about it being shale. That's just what I've always heard it referred to as.

Looks like it could be rhyolite to me. Nice finds!

Looks like rhyolite I find in SC. Find lots of green and blue. I have found blue slate also.

Lol. I can promise you, I did not learn that in geology class.

My geology advisor was a natural comic, and his classes, no matter beginning level, or advanced, were a laugh a minute.

And that’s one of the reasons you know so much,CMD!

It also looks like the Argillite we find in RI and Ma., which is actually argillaceous slate. And North Carolina has a slate belt. We used to have a member from down that way who found slate points that looked exactly like our argillite. Here’s a piece of RI Argillite, with a white “worm trail”, as they’re called. FWIW.....
