Not that I doubted you but you were right after I peeled away a few layers the yellow came back

sometimes the color change will go all the way through , most times it is just skin deep.

I have a chunk of raw Mookaite jasper that I have been removing spawls to make points and I made a couple of points with the raw rock then I started heat treating and yesterday I took a before and after picture of some pieces that I cooked. It looks like the yellows turned orange and everything else got darker.
