I found this stone that I believe was used as an anvil, and hammer stone near a large creek in Fayette county Illinois. One edge has a distinct red stain that may be the result of using the rock to crush ochre. The end has damage that looks like it was used to hammer flint or other stone. There is a dished area on one side that appears to be caused by wear from pounding roots or cracking nuts. The stone was buried along the creek and exposed when the creek bank caved in. The red spot was much brighter when I first pulled the rock from the sandy soil.
