I am trying to type this artifact. Looks like a scraper or knife made from basalt to me. It is supposively found in California. I would appreciate any help trying to classify this artifact for my collection.

looks like the basalt i have thats from AZ
if i had to guess i would say it was used as a knife just by the way the edge is made
all of the scrapers i have found are flaked on one edge and at about 60* - 80* angle
      jmho

but considering the material,it is very nicely made
basalt is some weird stuff to knapp, its hard and brittle at the same time
but makes for a super sharp edge

It is nice. I would have called it a scraper initially, but like Sneaky said, scrapers are usually unifacial. Maybe used both ways.

Yeah that is a different looking one. Don't see that material in my area ever. Is basalt volcanic?

Looks like basalt to me too. Basalt is an igneous rock and yes it is considered volcanic.
