It has long been assumed that the so-called "Red Paint People" of Late Archaic Maine were a part of the broader adaptation known as the Maritime Archaic. Maine archaeologist Bruce Bourque believes the Moorehead Phase of the Maritime Archaic in Maine, the phase that developed elaborate burial rituals and astounding burial goods, like huge slate bayonets, was a unique cultural expression present in only a small geographic area of Maine, and only there. First Vimeo link is a 3 minute summary of his most recent book. Second link is an hour audio lecture by Bourque.
