    Some of the earliest pottery in the southeast,,..orange period,,approximately 4000 b.p.....tick island. St. John’s river,,vollusa co fl....taken from photos...sponge spiculate tempered,..centerpiece is 9 “top to bottom,,bottom rolls under,,,this was a flat bottom vessel,,..top rim photo is 1 “ wide Click image for larger version

        Cool pottery. Sponge tempered? Awesome pieces...our earliest pottery here in Connecticut. Was soapstone bowls. ... steatite.

            Man, that’s nice stuff. That would be way more modern if it were found here. Our “old” stuff looks like a drunk third grader made it with a blindfold on. This is a piece I saw today , what we call mid to late woodland pottery, grit tempered.
