  • The Bird

This is a ceramic bird adorno. It’s attached to the rim of what was a Weeden island ceremonial vessel. It’s facing towards the sky ( upside down ), that’s not unusual, many are. The rim is extremely wavy and he obviously has been through h- - -. However he still has an alluring mystical charm, and that’s a good thing. don’t ask me why.

This piece came from Cedar Key Florida. It’s been treated to prevent further deterioration. Salt water infusion is responsible.

The featured bird is a buzzard, one of the southern death cult symbols of that culture. The bird had a crest as many do, although buzzards don’t have that feature. Most of it is missing , but what’s left can be seen in a couple of photos, and imagination needs to be applied to visualize what he looked like when first fashioned.

One final word, well maybe just a few..,. He was important to the ancients, and the artist crafted him with spiritual mystical thoughts in mind, transferring those thoughts and ideas by the movement of hand an eye, giving him a certain look, the kind that makes a person uneasy...The ceremony followed with dancing around a flickering campfire, causing the light to cast erie shadows that seemed at times, to breath life into the bird, the dancing progressed well into the night, and when the drums stopped and daylight came he saw the light no more for a thousand years or so.

Hope you like this under appreciated little bird and as always thanks for lookin.

Hey Hal, why is it a good thing that it still has a alluring mystical charm? 🙂. All joking aside your collection never ceases to amaze 👍. Really like pic #2.

The Andean condor does have a crest and looks similar to that. Could it be?

Cool Hal. I know a guy who found a carved bird head made from soapstone and it looks just like a parrot.
