  • A Drilled Shell Artifact From Florida

This piece came from Cedar Key Florida and was crafted from shell, I have limited knowledge of shells, I don’t know what kind but it is, but it’s as heavy as a dense hammer stone of the same size . It’s 1” wide and 3/4” thick. remnants of original white shell are still visible and It’s been treated to prevent further deterioration Thanks for lookin.

Super! Not from a columnella that was one honkin clam or other bivalve shell. If truly hard it may just be fossilized... Very interesting combination of holes I have only found barrel beads made from columnellas and the holes go straight through.

I think the other holes are deteriorated superficial worm holes, it does look fossilized, I’m thinking just the right combination of midden dirt., then it washed out on the beach, who knows,Lol.

No no no. One ..others are damage holes, marine worms or something.. Tom was confused also. My fault for not showing this view..It’s a large shell bead.I think. If you put it on a string and swung it, we’ll you certainly would get someone’s attention.new pic below.
