  • A couple from down low in the field

Part of a field I frequent is lower than the rest and the soil becomes black. I have always assumed it was once swamp and probably devoid of points. Having covered all the sweet spots, I decided to check out the low areas. Glad I did since this broad point was laying there.

Heavy patina from laying in muck all those years. Base was broke long age. The disc kisses show a nice brown chert under the crust.
Also found a resharpened point. Maybe a Motley that the guy couldn't part with.

Beautiful day in Ohio and not a bad hike after mowing the yard.
    Thanks for looking, fldwlkr

Around here, I always look low off a site. Most of the paleo artifacts I find come from down in the lower areas. I have a theory about that....

I find older ones in the low land as well plus if its lower chances are some could of washed from above. Those are nice. I mowed then just to make the day special I cut down about 15 saplings with the hand saw. I like your day better

15 with a hand saw!!! ouch. There is always more work to be done, I try to pace myself and sneak off when the wife isn't looking.

Great tip about lowland...I always have guys telling me high mounds are where the campsites were.
There is certainly merit in the wash down theory!

          Congrats!

Have to remember water levels change all the time. Adena times not much water, late Woodland 50 feet higher than Adena, Mississippian lots of water cause campsite way high. Archaic even more water and probably used canoes a lot. That's here where I live in north Georgia. No Paleo yet so no idea.
