  • Puff puff pass!!!

Found a "Bucket List" piece, today! Creek find. I couldn't believe what I had found. It didn't exactly make sense to me, until I got home and did some research. I feel pretty confident this is a limestone pipe. Something is broken off the top. From what I've been reading, tonight, it was likely a disk. Possibly a bowl, but more likely a disk. Three different publications by Mr Lar Hothem (Vol 1, 3, and 4) show examples of limestone disk pipes found in this area. This remnant strongly resembles those examples.

I sure hate that it appears to be broken, but surface find pipes are few and far between. I'll take it...

    More pics...

I wish I had an actual in-situ pic, but I picked it up before I realized it was even an artifact. The hole on top just caught my eye

Very nice. ANYTHING catlinite is another Bucket List, for me. Couple guys I hunt with have found a smidge. So far, it alludes me.

Considering this thing has likely been laying in water, for who knows how long, I'm curious if I should attempt to "stabilize it" in some way. I've heard of folks dipping fragile items in a glue/water mixture. I may be way off, here, idk. I've never found a pipe before. I'd hate to find it crumbled to pieces in a few days. I'd be interested if anyone has experience here.

Killer find man! If its limestone, it should be reasonably stable. Just don't drop it! :-)

I'm just assuming. It's covered in caliche and algae. Without scratching on it (which I'm not gonna do) limestone is my best guess.

                    Awesome find!

Depending on where in Kentucky, could be Caborn Welborn phase. (Union, Webster, Crittenden, and some adjacent counties.) The Slack farm site in Union county produced dozens of those pipes. They were used with the disc, with fixed discs, and without discs.

Otherwise made/traded by another Mississippian group.
                    Hong Kong, but from Indiana/Florida

You can't say the S-word around here, it's taboo. Lol. You've pinned me down, pretty close. I know some of the guys that were involved with that deal.

Stem is missing, for sure. I assume it would have been bone/reed/wood? And then something is broken off the top. Possibly a bowl, but I think more likely a disk.
