  • Is this a Split and Broken Ax head?

This was found around the same river bank north of the Sioux and Anishinaabe battle ground of the mid 1700's.  The rock is slate like in feel and sound when tapped.  The groove appears to have been part of a hole where a shaft would have been inserted and to me does show grooved wear like it was hand done.  The original shape is out there and if is is an artifact, I would love to know what it is or or was before breaking in half down the middle and if the Sioux or Ojibwe may have used it, if it is an artifact.

I have to agree with Jay. That is an unusual rock but I don't think I have ever seen an example of a NA axe using a method like that to atattch a handle.
