  • Im not sure about this one

Here's something I found on the shore in Barnstable County, MA specifically Pleasant Bay. I think its Marblehead Felsite but I'm just guessing. It looks worked and broken with one worn flat spot, maroon reddish in color with white specks in it. Any body know what it is? It might just be a cool rock! Click image for larger version

That's a cool looking rock! I'm not sure without handling it but it may be garnet in matrix? Does it feel heavier than a normal rock?

Yes it is a little heavier than you would think before picking it up. I don't often find stone this large in size in the wash line either. Thanks

Take it to a local gem and mineral shop. They should be able to figure it out. I'm still thinking it's garnet but there's an outside chance of it being corundum?

Either way it's a nice mineral specimen.

Nice rock, not an artifact imho but then again we don't get rocks like that down here along the Bay.

It's not an artifact. I don't think it's Marblehead, since that usually has a black matrix, but, though I have photos of all our most common lithics, identification of many is not my strength at all....
