  • Clay pipe

Found this at an old home site while metal detecting a few weeks ago. Its two and a half inches long and appears to be made of clay. Not sure if its colonial or native american, all opinions welcomed.

Looks a lot like soap stone or steatite and could be Native American, I would consider that a very nice find.

It does not look like clay to me. It is drilled and you would not drill clay. Cool find,

You mold clay the way you want it before you fire it .

Good point, hadn't thought of that. It's the first one I've ever found. Thanks for the help.

What area did you find this? County and state would be good, but at least state. It is soapstone, and a Hopewell/Ft. Ancient style pipe. Knowing where something is found is sometimes the direct key to identifying it. For ex., if you said this was found in Pa., I would say you better have it looked at. The type pipe should be from Tn./Ky. and south of there. It's not colonial, that's for sure.

Pkfrey, thanks for the info. I should have done some research before I posted. I really didn't know whether it was a special piece or not. I found it in southeast york county S.C. Thanks very much to everyone.
