A coworker of mine gave me this Mortar and pestle it comes from her family's farm in central California. I'm trying to learn as much about it as I can. Well this is what I think I know. The bowl is made from sandstone? It is 8" wide and 4 1/2 inches tall. Most likely used to grind acorns? Would like to know what the pestle is made of. If there is any more information on these I would love to know. Thanks everyone!

That's a classic 'bowl' or 'boulder' mortar.
Historically, they are believed to sit between the earliest 'matate' type and the later 'hopper' type.
Pestle is nice example of a fairly common style.
Mortars and pestles are principle artifacts for California's acorn cultures - important and wonderful objects.
That's a fantastic gift!California
