that looks more like gneiss to me a poor choice for tool stone.
This photo from the other day looks like schist and gneiss. Both of these stones are too soft to make tools out of.

Kat, depending on where in NC you are chert/flint might not be so common. If I were you, I would use that to my advantage and specifically look for it - The scarcer a good material is, the more likely any large chunk you come across was utilized.
Here’s a resource that shows some of the cherts (and crappier materials I wouldn’t recommend focusing on) which you are likely to encounter in NC. Take a look, then pick up the shiny, glossy rocks after a rain for a closer inspection.
Also, a magnifying glass or cheap ($10) jeweler’s loop from Amazon will help you see little regular secondary flaking, and as a bonus you’ll feel good and nerdy carrying it around
