  • Shaft Scrapers and a thumbnail?

Found these three yesterday in Denton County TX after the rain from Monday in a creek. Same one I usually go to. I am pretty sure these are artifacts, but I have not been doing so well on making ID's, so I'm and posting here. Hopefully I can dig out of this misidentifying rut.

The first one, shown above the quarter, is the most likely, I think. The first two pictures below are from just after I pulled it from the water. With it being wet, and the angle of the sun at the time made the features stand out far better than I could get with LED lighting (last picture in this row). I think this is a shaft scraper. It may be incomplete, but I can be sure. None of the edges indicate it has been broken since being flaked.

This one looks like another shaft scraper or spokeshave, if anything. The second picture might show some work on the edge, but I can't tell if it is creek chatter or not.

This last one is what I think could be a thumbnail scraper.

A man can never have too many tools. All looked worked. Many tools have not been typed, so they don't have a name. Someone should do something about that. The Thumbnail is good Lee. Spoke Shaves usually have a very even crescent shape. The one you show isn't smooth and that means it will not smooth out a shaft properly, so I think it is a piece of waste material. Kim

      Thank you, Kim.

A little while back I found something I think has the crescent shape you describe. Same material as the one above the quarter, but obviously a different type tool. A similar shape as well.
