ID:	346858 Hello All,
I’m new to the forum and also new to hunting artifacts. I have found that it’s very addicting, or it might just be my personality.
I’m from Hempstead Texas and that’s where I found this item. (I have also found several other rocks/artifacts.) I have sent pictures to a couple of “authenticators” . One person told me that it was just a rock, which it might be, and the other said that he could not help me.
Anyway, I was just wondering if this could possibly be an Artifact.
it fits perfectly in my hand and even has a grove that fits between your fingers for a good grip.
    I welcome all opinions.
    Thanks

Takes a while to learn what a worked piece looks like but there are plenty of pages here you can look at and also internet artifact ID sites to learn from. Good luck

I can't think of a reason to make a tool like that but Provenance is everything with some pieces... If I found that on one of my middens I'd be jumping for joy even not knowing what it might have been used for. If it was found in the river with other rounded rocks then it's a rock. Did you find this on a site where you have found other tools/points? Show us the pics. Us old timers have a special saying and category for items like this that have not been "authenticated" and look like rocks that fit in the hand. "FITH". Most of us had to get past the FITH stage.

I found it in the woods by a stream where I live. And as for other items, I just started looking (when metal detecting) but I think I have found items that might be real. Very odd and interesting rocks in my opinion. I just don’t know how to go about verifying them. I see I have much to learn.

Could be a net weight...or a large bead, where was this one found?

It looks like it hardstone. I’ve seen natural holes in rock but if it quartz at # 7 on the scale, I’ll have to do some research.
Does not look like a natural hole.

              Ok
I did some research and it may be a hole stone, related to a plummet.
There are not a great deal of these type stones, but the purpose was to fish... And, I could be totally wrong however I think it’s a artifact.

Guess I'll go out on the limb here. Just plain old rocks, cool looking, but rocks.

I agree I don’t think they could of drilled that type of stone. Looks like quartz type and natural to me. It’s still a cool rock though. Probably formed around a root which later rotted away and left the hole.

Don’t give up keep looking study from books rocks and artifacts. When you find something you will understand more.

            • #13
It looks as though the rock has a different composition around the hole. That would suggest to me something just weathered out of that part of the rock leaving a natural hole. Don't want to discourage you from looking however. Keep getting out there. Most of us have posted things that turned out not to be artifacts when we first started looking. This sight will help you learn alot.

At any rate, artifact or not... If it’s a “Hag” stone don’t toss it. Rock hounds pay for those , especially if it quartz...JJ
