A lot of people then did not have pockets. Handmade, styled or used/worn clothes there were less pockets and coins were kept on concealed strings/cords/necklaces. And..there have always been pick-pockets.
I am new to the forum and a newsletter from 2022 popped up in my email with this thread on it. I am 73 years old and when I was growing up in the rural Mississippi Delta it was common for black girls to wear coins with holes in them on a piece of thin string around their ankles. My mother worked in a store in the small town we lived in and she collected coins and we have quite a few of these.
Cool what are dates and mint marks on them? The seated liberty 1853 with arrows is worth a few bucks but if it was without arrows type 2 it would be worth a couple hundred
