Is it essential to have a hand pad with a channel through it, or will any hand pad work for that?

I use a pad of my own design Made from bailer belt the rubber is kind of tacky and the kevlar fibers make it tough.

Is that 4 layer pad for driving long flakes across the point or for final edge trimming. Thank you. Super work on wow material.

just for the flaking i use a smaller flat pad for the edge work
