  • High Grade KY Hornstone

A few years ago I was lucky to get my hands on a lot of this high grade Kentucky hornstone. I enjoyed knapping a lot of it but saved some to come back to from time to time. Not all hornstone is the same: This is the good stuff.

I've knapped the lower grade hornstones, but that looks at least tn grades above mine! Beautiful rock, nice work.

Nice point. Looks like higher grade than any I see, Having said that, I still love the tools I find made of any grade of hornstone. To me, it's a beautiful lithic. Creamy and usually has great crisp flaking.

Not the typical Hornstone I’m used to finding. Really nice material. Any idea what location this grade came from Ron?..Very nice and thanks for sharing!

Only that it's from Kentucky. The man who collected it said it was the best hornstone he had ever found in decades of searching for the material.

Great job on some cool lithics. I have found 1 un broken black point over the years. Have had trouble on IDing the lithics. Will have to post it and see what all think.

Great looking flaking and material. Hornstone is great stuff. I'm partial to some of the bluer flavors in Southern Indiana/Northern Kentucky, but the darker ones from Ky are also great.

"Any color you want as long as it's black" is a relatively famous quote attributed to Henry Ford, because it referred to exactly one shade of black.

In the case of Hornstone you can have "Any color you want as long as it's grey" and still actually get some really cool color combinations depending on the location and the geology.

At the time I bought 200 pounds of nodules of this high grade Hornstone. They just look like field rocks.

That's something to see. There are some huge rocks down the road someone dug up that has the tan cortex I bet they are chert but you would have to have a crane just to move one. Nice post Ron
