  • The New Spot

    .
Soon to become a soldier's best friend I think.
Boston Dynamics is known for making some scary-looking robots. But its new creation, Spot, a four-legged creature that can take a kick, might be the scariest of all.

If the women don\'t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

They are freaky, and being improved upon as I write. This one is loud as a backhoe, but given a few years may become completely stealthy.

Yep. Anyone with eyes can see us going down that slippery slope of artificial intelligence, and where it may lead.
The latest episode of NPR's Invisibilia takes us online. Some people think interacting with these machines is changing us all — for better and worse.

There was the psychotic HAL 9000 in "2001: A Space Odyssey," the humanoids which attacked their human masters in "I, Robot" and, of course, "The Terminator", where a robot is sent into the past to kill a woman whose son will end the tyranny of the machines.

'District 9' is one of my favorites. The dang wind has picked up here, and the house is losing power (or is it SkyNet?). Have a good cyber Valentines Day!

I wouldn't doubt for a second that the military has been way ahead of the curve so to speak for awhile. Its untelling how far they have developed these kinds of technologies for various applications ,  and we would never know.  I'm no conspiracy theorist but I would say the technology they tinker with is 20 or 30 years ahead of what cutting edge civilian technology is now. Who knows they may already built the soldier of the future  :dunno:

Clearpath Robotics is a 80-person company founded six years ago by three college buddies who had a passion for machine building. They specialize in all-terrain test vehicles, such as the Husky, a stout four-wheeled robot vehicle that’s used by the Department of Defense as a test machine. They make drones too, and have even built a robot boat called the Kingfisher. But there is one thing the company will never build: a robot that can kill.

"Clearpath Robotics was founded six years ago by three college buddies with a passion for building stuff. Its 80 employees specialize in all-terrain test rigs like the Husky, a stout four-wheeled robot vehicle used by researchers within the Department of Defense. They make drones too, and have even built a robotic boat called the Kingfisher. But there is one thing they will never, ever build: a robot that can kill.
Clearpath is the first and, so far as we can tell, only robotics company to pledge not to build killer robots. The decision, made last year, was simple, says co-founder and CTO Ryan Gariepy, and in fact it’s even helped the company recruit robot experts who’ve been drawn to Clearpath’s unique ethical stance. That’s because ethical questions are becoming a pressing matter for companies that build robotics systems. You see, we’re already at the dawn of the age of killer robots. And we’re completely unprepared for them.
It’s early days still. Korea’s Dodam systems, for example, builds an autonomous robotic turret called the Super aEgis II. It uses thermal cameras and laser range finders to identify and attack targets up to 3 kilometers away. And the US is reportedly experimenting with autonomous missile systems."

Former CIA Director Woolsey tells Congress of a doomsday scenario in which a nuclear-blast-triggered electromagnetic pulse takes down the US power grid, leading to starvation and death. Some experts decry 'hysteria' over EMPs.
