  • The good ol’ barter system

theres a guy who works in the mill my shop is at who makes custom knifes and forges stuff as a hobby, I bumped into him in the hall a few days back as he’s showing some of his knifes to another dude, me being a blade guy as well couldn’t help butting in an checking them out too, lol. We get to talking and I tell him I make custom knife sheaths as a hobby and tell him I’ll bring some in to show him, next day I do, he likes em and offers to resharpen my knifes and make me a new striker for my flint and steel set, so I offer to make him a sheath for one’a his knifes. I’ve been out sick for the last few days so this project gave me something to do when I’ve been up. The knife he made from a Nicholson bastard file and some punky oak wood he stabilized for the handle and ferro rod handle. Beautiful knife. I made a nice dangler style sheath with an added welt and ferro loop, plus the tinder/striker pocket with a moose antler button I made as well.

Real nice leather work there Jay - I especially like that fastener. I also like the blade on that knife. How long would you say that knife is overall?

That's a nice setup Jay, really good work on the sheath! Nothing like some a good old bartering, kinda like printing your own money lol, well except for its perfectly legal... Thanks for sharing!

Nice work Jay, cool how you two bumped into each other with your interests. I like how he save most of the tail end of the file, no doubt what that was made from.

ID:	296047 Well it’s been a few weeks since I had started this thread. The guy gave me the striker he made for me and it works great! Sends showers of sparks and I’m really happy with it. So outta the blue one night he sends me text saying just how much him and his son like the sheath and he offers to make me a knife of my own! Couldn’t believe it! He ends up giving me a file to take home so I can lay out my design on it. We talk about material selection and the general idea I had in mind. Every few nights he’d send me progress pics on how it was coming out. Well, yesterday he brought it in for me, and holy crap! This is the fixed blade knife of my dreams! I’d never be able to afford a custom knife such as this and I’m truly greatful to him for such generosity.

ID:	296055 The knife is 7 inch’s overall with exactly 3 1/2 inch’s of blade and handle each. The handle is stabilized oak and the pins and liner are copper. I don’t like a finger guard on my blades, I hold my knifes with the pommel inside my palm resting against my pinky similar to how you’d hold a Japanese sword. I went with a squared off handle instead of a rounded one too. It fits my hand Click image for larger version
