I think a lot of the "snapped base points" were created when the original platform that created the flake from which the point was made, was left on. When a large flake is driven off a spall, the thickest area is at the bulb of percussion . The most efficient way to get an arrowhead profile out of the flake, is to make the bulb area the base and the thinner area the tip.
