  • Safety Harbor Museum No.1

This series is gonna take more than a couple of posts, and will include stone, pottery and fossils...So, I’ve been thinking about this for some time, and I decided to introduce you to the museum in which I was involved with In the eighties...Welcome...Pic.1, the entrance...Pic.2, the historical marker..Pic.3, the mound...Pic. 4, the signing and this was followed by a celebration ( two days before members of Peninsular archeological society celebrated down in the Everglades, and they couldn’t see straight for two days... ...Pic.5 obviously is a cannon ( everyone in Florida has a cannon or a dugout ) this is what happens when their not treated...Pic6, I saw stone man for the first time today, I’m scratching my head over that one...Come inside and have a look see..Pic.7 is an onion bottle , Spanish artifacts were found at numerous locations in Safety Harbor, but there’s no connection to this onion bottle, I just thought it was a neat piece...Pic.8, is a piece of Cocuina, a Spaniard word that means shellfish or cockle and they used it in the building of forts, etc. in Florida... Thanks for lookin.

Wow that place sure has grown. I haven't seen it in many years since an artist's show there where the guy borrowed 284 beads in a a casebox and I got back 240 strung on fake gut string...... The most interesting thing about the museum is that the very first person who invited me to go digging in Florida was 'Ol Neal Lube, he used to be involved in the museum. Oh boy did he have caseboxes of points!!1! I'd looked for artifacts but never thought one could dig for them LOL and he got me started. We went to a place called the Cone Bros Pit up near Harris Grove/Thonotosassa/Flint Creek

I worked with Lube when we built the addition on the back of the museum, also did several mall shows together.. small world...I had stuff stolen from there also, I guess you gotta be grateful he didn’t take em all, lol...Also dug in Cone Bro’s. area, it just wasn’t good to me, I had better luck closer to the river park. see ya later, stay safe.

Looks like a interesting place.... reminds me effigy mounds, in n.e. Iowa... about a hour drive for me. I may go back there this fall, if I do I will certainly share the pics with you all...keep um coming Florida boy....✌️

Stone man looks out of place but what do I know. Those are great pictures, wish I had more knowledge of places like that when I was there.
