    It is likely that this is natural.  I assume you are in an area where there were once glaciers.  As the ice moves, it picks up rocks and rolls them against the ice, the ground, and other rocks smoothing them.  That is why there are so many rounded rocks in glacial outwash.  You can also get some stones that are rolled in one direction to develop a "roller" shape.  The broadening on the ends are due to the quartze veins you can see cutting through the stone which are more resistant to weathering than the host material.  Now that is not to say that ancient man did not find and use these stones for various purposes.  If you found this in an area providing abundant artifacts, they may have been the case.  Either way, this is a cool piece.
