People giving away their river rocks.
Hi, I've been responding to free, you haul river rocks. This last time, I saw alot of relics in the rocks. I showed the owners and they didn't care. The rocks were put around their pool 13 years ago. What do I do? Can I keep them? Thankyou

    Posted by [chase]:
As far as I can see if they are giving away the rocks and do not care about the artifacts, which are out of context, then I would say keep them.
    And welcome to AH.com :welcome:
Also I am moving your thread into Artifacts Questions and Answers.

If they gave you the rocks, then I'd say you don't have anything to worry about in the US. If you are in some other country, laws will vary.
It's probably worth mentioning that there are a lot of geofacts in certain types of gravels. Lots of eroded fossils, holes, concretions, etc. that can look very artifact like. If you want to post up a picture, we can probably tell you if you've got an artifact or a geofact.

Welcome from Central Illinois. Clovisoid is spot on with his advice. Lets see pics

Unfortunately, that's not an artefact... it's an oddly-shaped cobble with some water polishing.

Ok, Thankyou. I'm going to send a couple more pics. Thankyou again.

Those are only rocks. How would you shuck an oyster with a cobble anyway

I saw a show where a man said that Bigfoot broke clam shells with those. Really it was on TV so it must be true.

      Posted by [CoachG]:
If you find any of those rocks in context within a site or with other artifacts, then take a closeup pic of it. If you're just sorting through river rock that's probably gonna be a lost cause.

      Posted by [Jeffery Howle]:
I too like rocks and you have some nice rocks there....the one I would like to see is bottom right and show pic with size ....show couple angles

      Posted by [orari ]:
Something tells me we are about to see more rocks. Just for the record, I have actually found artifacts in supermarket and discount store parking lots. Sometimes, rather than fill their concrete parking lot islands with dirt for planting bushes, they just fill them in with rounded river cobbles and river gravel.. I found a really beautiful biface knife preform about 4 inches in length right there among the rocks while out shopping. It is made of mixed dark tan and slate blue chert and is sort of rough---maybe half way on its way to being a true preform.

Rocks, rocks and more rocks. You may get lucky and actually find an artifact in all those rocks.

      Posted by [JoshinMO]:
If you can find a place that sells gravel or topsoil they may let you poke around. Or places that take clean fill.

            Hi Wendy
You've now made 4 separate posts, all under the same title: "Any Artifacts here?" but I have moved them all into a single thread. Sadly, the answer is the same in all four cases: "No".
These are just river cobbles which have become broken, or were oddly shaped to begin with and then have become water tumlbed and polished. Every river, everywhere that runs through a rocky area is full of these kinds of rocks... but they are not artefacts.
On that basis I have moved the thread to a more appropriate area of the forum.
If you post more of the same rocks, then I'm afraid you'll get more of the same answer and those posts will also end up here in this section.
Please take the time to browse around the forum and have a look at what other collectors are showing and what features we look for to confirm an artefact.

                Posted by [painshill]:
Nope... that's not a celt or an artefact of any kind. It's just a rock. From what you've posted so far, it's apparent that you're just starting out (I hope) in this hobby and don't have enough experience to determine the features that characterise an artefact. Please browse around the forum and look at the examples being shown by other people. Use the forum search engine to look for "celt" posts. Have a look in our Information Centre. There's lots of good stuff about celts and other artefacts there too.
But in the meantime.... pleeeez stop posting more and more rocks all over the forum. The pictures you posted in "Off the Wall" also show nothing more than rocks, and I will be moving that post here too. [edit: now moved]

                Posted by [rmartin]:
Roger is absolutely right, there are simply no artifacts in your pile of gravel. To see some examples of celts check out this link from our information center. Spend a little or a lot of time there and see what artifacts really look like.
