I will call this yadkin my best point of last year. It’s a pretty fine grade of rhyolite found in central NC. Thanks for the look and happy new year everyone.

It has to be my copper culture pieces from my June trip.

I was thinking of trade points.I forgot you where up there in Canada. 2,000-4,000 yr. old copper artifacts is just insane.

Tamara, the large one is a tanged knife and the smaller one is a dart point.
PointHound, these are actually much older. The tanged knife is between 5 and 8 thousand years old.
        Thank you Jethro.

Well, it wasn't a point, or anything prehistoric. Instead, it was an early American sleigh bell. Packed with dirt, so I couldn't hear the little pellet inside, and I did not know what it was otherwise(duh?). So I did almost throw it back in the dirt, but liked the design, so I kept it. My research said c. 1790-1845. Clearly my best find for 2019.

Awesome Crotal bell. They put them on wagons/horses so they could hear each other coming around corners, etc. Super cool

Is there a stamp on the bottom Charlie?
They were sometimes marked with size and maker.

No, no maker's mark. Glad I had the good sense to keep it. I found a couple of points that day, and carried it in my spare hand till it was time to leave.

2019 was certainly my best year as major flooding last winter washed a lot of stuff out.

Also was fortunate to have plenty of time to look.

I think I averaged an artifact-a-day most likely. Mostly scrapers and flake tools but also a fair number of points, one or two of which are very nice indeed.

Also extremely pleased to have found mortars and pestles which are probably the defining artifacts for the acorn cultures that populated these valleys.

So top finds are this beautiful Houx Contracting Stem (found last month) and this awesome Hopper mortar.

Hope 2020 can keep the streak going but doubt I can be that lucky.

Look at the flaking on that piece. It is excellent! Almost looks exotic, if that's the right word to use.
