Today there was a Knap In right down the road from me. There were several vendors present . It was a small event but interesting. I watched a guy use a bow drill to start a fire. I liked his tool kit. He used a deer shoulder bone for a socket at the top of his spindle . I thought it was ingenious that he utilized this bone in such a way.

Hey Matt, That is a neat looking drill kit. Bone and Wood were probably used a lot as a bearing block. A lubricant on the top end of the spindle would help to keep the socket from heating up. I have learned that bone weakens quickly with heat. I like the way he decorated the pieces with fire but you want to be careful with that. I also used fire to "age" a couple of bone harpoon points. The points were so weak that they snapped easily.Michigan Yooper

He has antler inserted at the top of the cane spindle. He says it has almost zero friction but now and then puts a little wax in the socket to reduce any friction even further.TN formerly CT Visit our store http://stores.arrowheads.com/store.p...m-Trading-Post
